Personal Composition Rubric

Assignment:

Create a unique creative artistic composition that represents who you are and what you are like using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.

  1. 1 object/image that means something you/something you like.
  2. Your birthday number or year.
  3. A quote or song lyric (needs to be school appropriate).
  4. A variety of lines, shapes, designs and doodles, no large negative spaces.
  5. Colored Nicely.
  6. A focal point and EMPHASIS.

Grading Rubric:

Requirements:

  • 20-16 points: Student meets all the requirements above.
  • 15-11 points: Student has only 3 or 4 requirements.
  • 10-6 points: Student has 2 of the 4 requirements.
  • 5-0 points: Student has none of the requirements.

Use of the elements:

  • 20-16 points: Student has a creative variety of lines, shapes, and doodles. There is shading and texture.
  • 15-11 points: Student has some variety of lines, shapes, and a little value.
  • 10-6 points: Student has few lines and shapes, lots of empty spaces, lots of repeat images and ideas.
  • 5-0 points: Student has no creative lines and just basic shapes that do not fill up the space well.

Use of Principles:

  • 20-16 points: Student has an easy to find focal emphasis, the image is balanced with good flow and a well thought out composition.
  • 15-11 points: Student has a decent composition, with some focal emphasis, but could be more thoughtful of composition.
  • 10-6 points: Student did not plan the composition well, there is no movement or balance, things are just randomly placed.
  • 5-0 points: No planning the composition, nothing of interest.

Creativity:

  • 20-16 points: The artwork is very creative and original. Also personal to the student.
  • 15-11 points: The artwork is somewhat creative, some parts are simple and basic though.
  • 10-6 points: The artwork is basic and simple, little creativity or originality.
  • 5-0 points: There is no creativity, its just drawn out in a boring way.

Overall Craftsmanship:

  • 20-16 points: The drawing is neat and clean, the coloring is bold (pressed down).
  • 15-11 points: The drawing is drawn well but the paper is a mess and the coloring is a little messy.
  • 10-6 points: The drawing is messy (didn’t take their time) and the coloring is messy.
  • 5-0 points: The drawing is messy and is not well colored.
